One method of protecting slow running / high torque rotating machinery from overload is a
simple shear pin. However, the conventional round shear pin has its drawbacks with the
removal of the broken halves and the necessary clearance for fitting which causes pin
fatigue, fretting and uncertainty in load sharing between pins.
Wedgegard was designed to overcome these problems and also meet the increasing
demands for safety and minimum downtime required by today’s process plant.
Based upon a wedge shaped pin, this overload system is a completely new concept in
shear pin protection and works as illustrated.
Wedgegard Advantages
- Easy access to pins – drive reset in minutes
- Wedge construction gives maximum rigidity with no backlash; ideal for indexing or reversing
drives.
- Clamping screws give positive axial location; shear neck cannot be displaced from correct
position between flanges.
- Equal load sharing with multiple pins in high torque drives.
- Very high capacity within compact dimesions.
- Shear necks are standardised and colour coded giving safe, tamper-proof repeatability and
spares economy.
- “Fail-safe” under all conditions.
- Not affected by changes in temperature or humidity.
- Ability to release not dependent on lubrication.
